He landed in my backyard twice in 1990. The first time was on July 4th, when he came to D.C. to promote his HBO special ("I'm Doomed") on "Larry King Live." He called me a few days before and said it was fine with him if I photo- graphed him there, but to make sure to get the necessary permission from the show, which I took care of as soon as I hung up. Richard once told me that the comedians he likes are the ones who are as funny off stage as they are on stage. He could have been describing himself. He was on a roll from the MENU
